Expert care for Your Digestive Problem - Free Consultations

Colonoscopy is a procedure a doctor uses to look at the inside of the colon and rectum with a colonoscope, which is a long, flexible tube about the width of a finger with a light and small video camera on the end. It’s put in through the anus and into the rectum and colon. Special instruments can be passed through the colonoscope to biopsy (sample) or remove any suspicious-looking areas such as polyps, if needed.
The colonoscope is a powerful tool in the fight against cancer that has continued to evolve over decades. Today, we have the ability to perform colonoscopy exams that are safe and comfortable for patients, while also employing technology that delivers crisp, improved visualization and high-definition imaging.

Why do I need Endoscopy?

A colonoscopy is often done to check what's causing your bowel symptoms, such as:
- Investigate intestinal signs and symptoms: A colonoscopy can help your doctor identify possible causes of abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea and other intestinal problems which you have
- Screen for colon cancer: If you're age 45 or older and at average risk of colon cancer — you have no colon cancer risk factors other than age — your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy every 10 years. If you have other risk factors, your doctor may recommend a colon screening. Colonoscopy is one of a few options for colon cancer screening and to investigate the causes of your colon
- Look for more polyps: If you have had polyps before, your doctor may recommend a follow-up colonoscopy to look for and remove any additional polyps. This is done to reduce your risk of colon cancer
- Treat an issue: Sometimes, a colonoscopy may be done for treatment purposes, such as placing a stent or removing an object in your colon
Why do I need to go for Colonoscopy?
Screening Colonoscopy: This test is used to screen your colon to identify the causes. A screening colonoscopy is recommended at age 50 or people have problems in their colon. If you are under age 50 and you have problems in your digestive tract, you can for colonoscopy irrespective of your age.
Diagnostic Colonoscopy: A diagnostic colonoscopy occurs when sample tissue must be taken to diagnose an unusual or abnormal-looking growth or section of tissue during a screening colonoscopy. Once tissue is taken, a screening colonoscopy becomes diagnostic. Any symptom such as a change in bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, anemia, etc. prior to the procedure and noted as a symptom in your medical records may also indicate that a diagnostic colonoscopy is needed.
Surveillance of the Colon: Patients that have a family history of polyps or colon cancer may require surveillance of the colon with continuous observation or testing. Surveillance of the colon is considered preventive if the patient is being observed because of risk factors (e.g., work environment) or due to family history. Surveillance of the colon is considered medical if it is being done to observe or monitor a known symptom or problem.

Why do I need colonoscopy?
Colonoscopies are important because they can detect cancers while they're still treatable, and polyps (small growths) before they potentially develop into cancer. Anyone 50 or over – or folks under 50 with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps – should undergo the procedure.
-
How should I prepare for a colonoscopy?
It is crucial to consume only clear liquids in the 24 hours leading up to the colonoscopy.
Examples of acceptable clear liquids include:
- Clear broth or bouillon
- Coffee or tea, but with no milk or creamer added
- Electrolyte-containing beverages, such as sports drinks
- Gelatin
- Popsicles
- Strained fruit juices without pulp
-
Is Colonoscopy Painful?
Colonoscopies are usually not painful, and patients generally do not feel anything at all. Most colonoscopies are performed using “intravenous sedation” or “twilight sedation” in which patients are drowsy, but comfortable and still breathing on their own.
-
Do I need a GP referral or self-referral?
For this, you do not need referral from NHS, it is a self-pay endoscopy.
If you have NHS referral, share with our team and they will contact you. However, most of the patients with NHS waiting for a longer period of time to get a referral, there will be a chance of spreading disease.
